Auto Payment Solutions Revives an Old Scam

In June 2010, the Auto Relief Group LLC scam was shut down by government regulators for making false claims and engaging in deceptive and unfair advertising. Now Auto Payment Solutions and the National Auto Loan Reduction Center are airing similar television commercials with claims they can also facilitate loan modifications on car loans.

This is nothing more than the reincarnation of an old scam. Auto Payment Solutions and the National Auto Loan Reduction Center cannot do anything on your behalf that you cannot do on your own. Plus, you are better off if you negotiate your own arrangements with your lender rather than paying hundreds of dollars for them to send form letters on your behalf.

Auto Payment Solutions and the National Auto Loan Reduction Center are referral services that sell leads to other companies that claim to be able to negotiate loan modifications on car loans. These companies indeed are victimizing drivers who are falling behind on their car payments. As a desperate attempt to avoid repossession, many consumers are putting their trust in these rogue companies in hopes that they can keep their cars. The trouble is, by sending Auto Payment Solutions or any affiliated company your hard earned cash instead of sending it to your lender, you are actually making matters worse.

After viewing the television commercial for this scam, I immediately noted the similarities to the Auto Relief Group scam that made headlines earlier in 2010. The claims made in this scam are not only unrealistic, they are absolutely false. Auto Payment Solutions and the National Auto Loan Reduction Center claim to be able to:
  • Lower your monthly payments by 50%
  • Extend your payment terms
  • Stop vehicle repossession
  • Save your credit
The truth is, no company can do any of these things on a consistent basis. If you sign with that company, you will likely find out too late that they cannot fulfill their empty promises.

The costs of falling for one of these scams can be staggering. You might be out their fees, but if your car is repossessed, it could cost you an extra $500 to $1,000 on top of your late payments if you can convince the lender to let you pick up where you left off. The problem is that once a lender has repossessed your vehicle, generally the only way to get it back is to pay the entire loan balance plus all costs associated with the repossession. Those costs can include the repo fee, storage fees, legal fees and late fees.

If you are having trouble with your car payments, then you need to consider one of the following realistic options that may provide a solution:
  1. Discuss your situation with your lender, preferably before you fall behind to see if they can provide some limited relief (refinance the car loan for a lower payment and longer term, special repayment arrangement to catch up on late payments).
  2. Complete a credit counseling session to develop a budget and see if other high-interest bills are interfering with your car payment. You might be eligible for lower payments and interest on certain unsecured debts.
  3. Get permission from your lender to sell the vehicle at a partial loss, with the remainder to be repaid as an unsecured loan.
  4. Speak with an attorney if the car payment is only part of a bigger disaster that is brewing.
The false claims made by Auto Payment Solutions and the National Auto Loan Reduction Center are unconscionable. Do yourself a favor and make sure that you are not one of the victims of the Auto Payment Solutions scam.

Note: Auto Payment Solutions and the National Auto Loan Reduction Center are not related to Auto Payment Solution of Reno, NV according to Charles Johnson CEO/Owner of Auto Payment Solution. Johnson provided the following additional information to differentiate his company from those depicted above:

"The TV commercial is produced by a company by the name of spotlight media. The TV commercial is on their site and on their alias site autopaymentsolutions.tv. Auto Payment Solution of Reno NV has no affiliation with this company. The alias spotlight media uses on its TV commercial is Auto Payment Solutions. (note the "s" on the end of Solutions). We have no affiliation with the brand name Auto Payment Solutions. When I started Auto Payment Solution, spotlight media had not yet started running its commercial and I was unaware of them. It is true that we are an auto loan modification service company. We provide a service to people in danger of losing their vehicle to repossession. It is also true you can attempt this on your own. The loan processing team we contracted has the highest success rate in the country. It is true that not everyone can get their auto loan modified. We have loan specialists who pre-approve your file before we request any information from you and submitting it to processing. Like any service, we charge a fee for our service. These negotiations are stressful and time consuming. Many people do not have the time during business hours to make the necessary calls to negotiate with their lender. Others people simply do not want to deal with the stress involved confronting and negotiating modified terms for their loan. Auto Payment Solution will gather the necessary information from you and do the negotiation for you. There are many companies on the web who offer similar services."

Dear Irwin Feldman:

Once again, you are talking about prepaying interest on a future yet to be taken out loan. Not only are the rates well above 100% APR, but you are paying the fees well before you even decide to take out the "loan."

By the way, that service is a scam, and it will be broken up by regulators if it ever reaches critical mass. The perpetrators of the autopaymentassistance.com scam will face fines and jail time if and when they are investigated. That should make you feel uneasy about prepaying for a lowsy "service" that you will likely not receive.

Any reasonable person would instead take those "fees" for a "membership" and place them into a savings account so that they can make their own car payment in lean times without paying those crooks.

I find it unblievable that you would comment on a company without getting the facts. I am a customer of autopaymentassistance, and had never heard of them before seeing the tv commercial. I joined in September 2010. In december I was out of work for two weeks and asked them to make my January payment to Wells Fargo of $ 469.30 which they did. I received the repay agreement and selected to repay monthly at $ 78.21 for six months. Thats no interest. I dont know what loan sharks are where you come from but i'll stick with these folks. If you sell yourself as a consultant then your opinions should be based on facts not the type of stufff I see you doing to what I see as an excellent company.

Again, autopaymentassistance.com is a deplorable option for anyone. A loan shark would be a better option. Thank you "Mike Mason" for your comment. There are only 2 options. Either you work for the company or you are an unfortunate victim. Both are losing scenarios.

Hello to all. I could not help but to read your post on this company called autopaymentassistance.com. I went to there website and I also gave them a call. Personally, I think the company is great, and the idea of them helping people pay there car note is excellent. First, what company do you know of that will actually help you pay your car note for you. NONE. Times is hard and there is a company out here to help me pay my car note if I get behind. Its a membership base business. That means that the benefit to the members is that they can get there car not paid under there membership. I dont expect anyone to pay my car note for me for FREE. I like the company. Im a member of autopaymentassistance and will continue to stay a member as long as Im financing a car. I signed up for $49.00 and they paid my car not, thats $ 430.00. Of course I have to pay the money back but I pay it back overa six month period with NO INTEREST. Now try to do that at a title pawn company, or loan company. A loan company is gonna charge you (3) times the amount you borrow. I would endorse this company and I reconmend all my friends to do the same..... Tony. Mason

Dear "Jeff King":

Thank you for leaving your comment on 1/24/2011 about autopaymentassistance.com. I investigated the website and discovered that the service you mentioned is one of the worst, most unconscionable scams I have ever uncovered. Readers should avoid going to that website and instead read about our review of the scam: http://www.debtorsunite.com/Blog/Debtors-Fight-Back/January-2011/AutoPaymentAssistance-com-is-Actually-a-Pre-Paymen.aspx

I tried this company called www.autopaymentassistance.com. They actually paid my car note for me and I had to pay the money back with NO interest as long as you are a member of the company.

Received call from "APS", two (2) weeks ago claiming they could lower my car payments. Sent them $24.50, to start the process and
was told they would send me the application to submit to the Bank within five to eight days. I have not received anything from them and cannot get them on the Phone or on the internet?

Thank you for saving me from making the same mistake. I'm sorry you had to learn the hard way and appreciate your posting your experience with this company. It has helped and I hope it doesn't happen to you again. Thank you!

Total Scam as far as the 100% refund guarantee. Their phone is cut off, no other contact information available. Paid money, got some papers and that was it money gone, no more contact information. Lesson learned. Scam scam scam.
I will spend the next 6 months trying to warn all concerned. Will be contacting my states legislative office regarding the lure of commercials and my experience.

Auto Payment Solution asked me to pay $350
so it can negotiatie a reduction in my payment
(50%). And was told to start paying the half
payment immediately. When the auto company
called for the rest of the payment, I reported to
Auto Payment Solution and was told it will
take six months before it can negotiate the
reduction so I should go ahead and pay the
regular payment for those six months. The next
call, I was told the company that took my payment was located in Utah and I should call
thee for my money or I should get a letter from
the loan company that the loan company that
it does not accept loan negotiated by third
party before I can receive my refund. When I
contacted the loan company, it said it does not
give such letter or notices.
This is where we are today and Auto Payment
does not want to refund my money.
