Auto Relief Group LLC Scam is Busted

By Kenneth Long on July 1, 2010

The massive Auto Relief Group scam is finally busted. Auto Relief Group LLC advertised heavily on both the internet and television in 2009 and early 2010. By June 2010, this massive scam was shut down by regulators.

Jeffrey Taylor, Director of Sales of Auto Relief Group provided the following quote in a press release on January 29, 2010:

“Auto Relief Group provides you with the hands on help in restructuring your loan. ARG will work with your current lender, acting as a trusted third party and a valuable "buffer" between parties involved. Since ARG works on "success" basis, our interest is entirely aligned with yours. If we cannot help you negotiate acceptable terms for your loan, we don't feel like we have earned our fee and you owe us nothing”

As soon as I saw the first commercial, I knew immediately that the company was making false claims. Any company that claims they can lower your car payment without refinancing the loan is making false representations. For the average consumer, the scam is less obvious.

Daniel Stermer was appointed Receiver of the now defunct company. He is charged with seizing the remaining assets of the company and returning whatever funds remain to the customers that were defrauded.

For those who sent in money to Auto Relief Group, it is likely that most of your money will never be seen again. The company vacated its leased office space after being unable to pay the $30,000 monthly rent. If you should receive any refund, understand that it would only be a partial refund, would likely take at least a year to issue and would have to follow the claims process established by the Receiver.

For information on the claims process, you may contact the Receiver Daniel Stermer at 1-877-842-7667. The Receiver initially seized the website in order to provide updates on attempts to seize the company's assets so that refunds could be made. Once the Receiver completes the dissolution of the business, you can expect that any money that you paid into the scam that was not refunded is lost forever.

What Else Can You Do?

If you are having trouble with your car payment, there are some viable options. First, you need to make sure that you continue making your regular car payment to your lender. If you missed any payments or are in danger of missing a payment, it is necessary to keep your lender informed. Some lenders may order repossession right away if you miss a payment and do not stay in contact with the lender.

Understand that lenders do not want the car back. They want you to fulfill your obligation to repay the loan as agreed. If you are having a hardship, see if there is any direct assistance available by the lender. They might provide a temporary reprieve for a month if you can justify your circumstances and prove that you can afford the long-term payments.

Realistically though, your best shot at improving the terms of your loan is to refinance the car with another lender. This can be an option if your credit is better and the loan balance is smaller than when you first bought the car.

If you are in worse shape as most of Auto Relief Group's customers are, then you have little options other than trying to improve your budget so that you can afford your payments. Most importantly, make sure that you don't repeat your mistake of buying more car than you can afford and financing it with a high-interest loan.

Customers of Auto Relief Group are encouraged to comment on their experiences.

I got a car payment behind and ended up never really catching up and getting a repo Intead of losing money hanging on to my car by a thread I hope the same happens to those behind this and they get raped in jail.

Rationale
All of you crying ass whining sissy's on here claiming that this company took your money. What about you scammers who refused to make your car payments but continued driving the car instead of giving it back to the lender. I'm so sick and tired of irresponsible consumers who buy $hit they can't afford and then look for ways to get out of paying for it. Maybe these guys went about helping in the wrong way, but every one of you who sent them money should understand that a fool and his money are soon parted. This post lists a ridiculous solution as well as it states that you should contact your lender for help. Why would they help? You owe them a debt and they are going to get it either willingly or by wage garnishment. I always love to read about ignorant consumers who want retribution against someone for doing to them exactly what they were trying to do to their lender. Beat it deadbeats!

Dear Cheryl W:
Unfortunately, your money is likely lost forever. You may contact the Attorney General for your state for more information. I would encourage you to develop a healthy skepticism towards future advertising so that you ask tough questions and research each firm before signing a contract. Also, talk with you lender to let them know what occurred. See how flexible they can be to restore your account to current status. Thank you for sharing your story.

I am a single parent struggling hard, thought that ARG would work for me, got $498 from me thinking they would help lower my car note after sending money I tried contacting them, had name a number of contact person, after several failed attempts of not reaching anyone, tried website,lo and behold found that a lawsuit had been filed against them, this was June of last year. Filed a claim sent all info requested within 4-6 weeks, haven't heard anything since. Just want my money back, so where do i go from here?

I sent them the same $300.00 everyone else did, they also didn't let me know that I had to do all the work and all they sent was a packet with a how to. I sent my info to my lender and then tried calling ARG, but thier phone was disconnected by then. It had been working 2 weeks before that. I was able to work with my lender directly and reduce my loan amount by 160.00 per month, but had to do a loan extension, which ARG also never mentioned.
I really want my money back from them...anything would be great, just like everyone else, I struggle to make ends meet (but they ususally don't).

Auto Relief Group took my money($300.00) with the accumption of them lowering my car payment. I called their office starting from 11/9/09 trying to get help but everyone l I spoke with kept giving me the run around. The supervisor Desmond Cook never would return my calls. I have all dates of call and who I spoke with. I just want my $300.00 back. I live on a fixed income and really do need the money.

They should go to jail for scamming the public. I need their proper address. If you know it, please e-mail it to me. Thanks.

The Auto Relief Group promised to help lower my car payments by as much as 50%. After paying them $298, I'm unable to contact anyone at the comapany. They didn't explain that I would be the one doing the work involved in the loan modification. They assured me that they dealt with Toyota Financial. I was mailed a packet that I had to put together to sent to Toyota. It's been 4 months, and I haven't heard /received a thing from either company. There's no contact number provided for Toyota.

I just filed a complaint with the BBB, and the confirmation received backs says "claim unprocessable). I can't believe someone chose to scam me out of $300 hard-earned dollars. Why do people do this to each other.
1/12/2011 4:13:58 PM

GinaS
They didn't explain to me that I'd be the one putting a package together to send to the loan company. It's been 4 months since I sent this package to Toyota, and yet to get confirmation that it was received. Today I tried to call them, and...nothing. I was wondering why I wasnt hearing their commercials on the radio any longer. I can't believe that I got scammed - I'm usually skeptical about such things, but they sounded legit.

Good day,
i called Auto Payment Solution just last week, because we are having a hardship. My husband got laid off and i thought i will give it a try to call these guys up. After talking to this guy in Florida the guaranteed me, that they could drop the payment to $180> First i thought cool, but then he told me that it would cost $347 just for him, for a fee. My answer was, how can i send you that amount, when this would cover my car payment. Also he said that the whole process would take 4 to 6 weeks. That means in the end that i still have to make my regular monthly payment until that would have been lowered. this was the second where all my alarm bells started ringing. So i told him that i would think about it, but after now reading all these statements i know i did the right thing to listen to my guts. I hate scam like this. Us people we have problems and hardship enough and there is always someone trying to suck us in instead of really helping us. Do not call Auto Payment Solutions. Thats all i can say.

I tried getting a refund from these guys and they kept advising they were working on my file and it was in approval status. I called every two weeks for status updates. I worked with my lendor in every program they offered. One guy after many escalations called me and made a call to the lendor with me on the line. They advised him there was nothing they could do. I asked for a refund at that point and was told it was not an option and they would keep working through the process and find a loop-hole. I lost $300 and lots of time. I'd like to believe they tried to help but would have rather seen results. I can't believe I let myself do this!!!

Still in hopes, all that was scammed be refunded,,,including myself. It would be a "Shame", if this company gets away with everyone's money. Justice needs to be served to all involved in this scam!!!

I too am a victim to this scam. They made it sound so easy for them to handle. Well it turns out most if not all finance companies do not "refinance" or "extend" your loans out. I must say - they must have been sitting pretty for a while with everyone's hard-earned money in their pockets!

Autorelief group took my money for two cars and Idid not get any help on my loans. They are a complete scam and the worst kind of crooks. They should be put in jail and made to return all money

I am so glad I wasn't able to send them any money, and I would have used a pre paid debt card anyways so if I don't put money on the card they would get nothing, that's all the info they got from me was a pre paid debt card, I had a feeling something wasn't right with them when I didn't see their commercials anymore and I called their main phone line and I got a busy signal.

I'm in the same boat as all of you. They took $125.00 out of my acct just last week under Capitol Auto Resource. Originally, they were supposed to take it on july 2, i knew something was up, so I tried to put a stop payment on it, but it didn't work because they took it out under a different name. Now my bank is trying to dispute the charge. Hope that we can all get our money back.

Auto Relief Group took some of the money ($100.00). The company initially took the entire amount after I said to only take a partial payment, but I called the individual I was working with and all but $100.00 was returned to my account. At least only $100.00 was taken--but I could have used that $100.00--wish there was a way I could get that amount back.
