How Not to Do Debt Consolidation in Utah |
By Kari Johnson on January 28, 2011
In a lot of ways, consolidating your debt in Utah is like debt consolidation anywhere else in the United States.
The benefits are the same: creditors stop calling you, your debt stops growing due to interest (if you get the right rate), and you only have one payment to make every month.
The methods are also pretty much the same. The most popular is to get a loan and use it to pay off your debts. A secured loan (using something as collateral) will offer you the best interest rates, but unsecured loans are also available.
There are also some things you should not do. For instance, do not get a “hard money loan.” The interest rates on a hard money loan (a type of second mortgage) are extremely high and could put you more in debt in the long run. If you employ a company, do not do so carelessly. Make sure what they are promising you are reasonable and that they have a good reputation. Be thorough in your search. Keep an eye on the statements your creditors send you so you can be sure the consolidation company is forwarding the payments like they are supposed to. Above all, do not continue to charge things to your credit cards. If you are using a company, they should tell you this: once you begin to consolidate your debt, you should stop adding to it. Do that by not using credit for purchases.
If debt consolidation is not for you, there are other options. Credit counseling (with a non-profit company is probably best) will advise you on the best ways to get rid of your debt and keep it away. On the other hand, there is also debt settlement. You can do this by negotiating with your creditors for lower interest or a lower balance, or employ a company in Utah to negotiate for you. Once again, be sure they are a reliable company before trusting them with your finances. If you are not careful, things could get worse instead of better.
Always do your research before deciding how you are going to deal with your debt. Any number of factors could contribute to determining which method is best for you and your situation.
When searching for debt consolidation Utah does offer in-state and national assistance. A quick BBB check could help you verify that a debt consolidation service is reputable.
