3 Debt Reduction Tips For Getting Out of Trouble

By Ashley Russell on June 24, 2011

do-it-yourself-(1).jpgOnce you run into debt problems, you can have trouble getting out. There are a few easy ways to help you manage your debts.

First, know what you owe. Create a spreadsheet that contains all of your current debts. Be sure to include the date it is due every month, the interest rate, and the payment amount. Then, every month you will see how your debt slowly shrinks. This is an easy way to keep up with your payments and the total amount of debt you owe, and it also makes you feel better to see the total amount decrease as time passes. Plus, you will know which debt has the highest interest rate so you can try to pay it off first.

Second, do not overpay. The reason that many people get into debt is because at some point they run out of money, so they use credit cards or loans to substitute. Instead of using the extra money from your check to pay off more of your debt, start a savings account. That way, if you ever have a month where you cannot afford even the minimum payment, you can draw from the excess you have saved.

Third, come up with a budget. You should try to keep a spending journal so that you know where all of your money is going. This will allow you to see where you need to cut down on spending. Avoid spending money on unnecessary things while you are trying to repay your debts. If you can, eliminate some of the superfluous things that you currently pay for such as satellite television or luxurious cars.

If you do not think that you can do it alone, then look into using a credit counseling agency. They can help you to look into your debts and determine the best plan of action to eliminate them. Just be smart with the money you have so that you will not accrue anymore debts. Even small changes in your spending habits can help to alleviate your debt.
Note: These and other debt reduction tips may depend on your actual situation. For more serious financial situations, you may need immediate assistance.
