Collection Agency Debt Settlement: Don't Let them Bully You!

By Ashley Russell on February 10, 2011

bite-(1).jpgSome lenders turn to collection agencies to handle their dirty work. These agencies work as a mediator between the lender and the debtor. This is a process known as collection agency debt settlement.

These collection agencies usually send letters and make phone calls to get in contact with the debtor. These agencies make threats to the debtors in an attempt to scare them into paying their payments. They basically try to cash in on the debtors fear of legal action. Although the threats are prevalent, the agencies rarely take debtors to court over small amounts owed because the court costs can outweigh the benefits.

Most collection agencies work on commission. They do not make any money if you do not pay back any of your loans. This is another reason why these agencies are so persistent with threatening debtors to repay their loans.

When attempting to settle debts owed, do not let an agency’s threats push you into making a decision that is not the best for you. There are debt settlement programs that are out there for you to look into. These settlement programs charge fees up front in return for a promise to negotiate a lower amount owed to collection agencies. Often these programs are a scam and do not appease lenders or collection agencies in time to save your credit.

The best course of action in this situation is to try to come up with an agreement with the lender or collection agency. If you explain your situation, there may be a way that something can be worked out to help alleviate your financial burdens. Remember that at the end of the day, they just want to collect as much money as quickly as possible. If you are unsure about which course of action is best for you, you can always go to a credit counseling agency that will have a better understanding of what options you have.
