The Steps to Repair Credit up to 100 Points in a Month

By Erik Hammel on October 31, 2011

1200629_32428586-(1).jpgPaying the bills have been troublesome and your once solid credit score now stands out like sore thumb. Does this sound like you? Wondering what you can do to repair the damage to your credit? There are several steps to credit repair you can take yourself to improve your credit score and ensure it does not slip back down.

Listed below are the basic steps to credit repair. Try and follow these ten steps in the order they appear in order to maximize efficiency:
  • Step One: Get the Report. Knowing exactly where you stand with your credit rating is the first step. Request a copy of your credit report from your national consumer credit reporting agency. And don’t worry about the expense. Credit reports are free – each reporting agency is required to provide a free credit report to any consumer who requests it. Check the credit report for any discrepancies and make sure it is 100% accurate. Concentrate on all the details: name, addresses (both past and present), other personal details, and trade lines.
  • Step Two: Clear the Errors. If you find an error, you will need to write to the credit bureau that is reporting the erroneous information and dispute it.
  • Step Three: Make a Record. The next step is to make a list of all the negative items on your credit report. Look through them and decide whether or not you want to dispute them. Try and dispute anything that you do not agree with. You have nothing to lose in the process. The agency is required to listen to your request.
  • Step Four – Disputing the negative items. There are two options when it comes to disputing items on your credit report: you can dispute them online at any one of the credit bureau’s websites, or you can write letters by hand to send in. Either method is effective.
  • Step Five – Find an example. The easiest way to write an effective dispute letters is to use one that has already been proven effective. There are all sorts of letter templates all over the place online. A good template can be found here.
  • Step Six – Be Thorough Any documentation that you have supporting your claim should be sent with your dispute letter. The more proof you have, the greater the chance it will be overturned. Even if you do not have proof, send a dispute letter anyway. In many cases, you can still get items removed.
  • Step Seven – Patience. You will not get any results in the mail for at least 30 days. Call the credit bureaus and ask for an update if you still have not heard anything within 45 days.
  • Step Eight – Review the letter. Eventually, you will get a letter from the credit bureau showing you what corrections were made, if any. Carefully review what happened.
  • Step Nine – Persistence, Persistence, Persistence. If you are not satisfied with the amendments (or lack of), don’t give in. Being persistent is what triumphs when it comes to fast credit repair. If you have to, keep disputing and you’ll eventually win.
  • Step Ten – Stay On Top of Things. When trying to dispute multiple items all at different intervals, make sure to have a quick response time coupled with excellent documentation. When you get those return letters in the mail, deal with them right away and you will stay ahead of the game.
If you follow though with all the previous steps mentioned above, it is not impossible to raise your credit score up to 100 points in a month’s time. Good luck!
