Pennsylvania Help with Utility Bills |
By Kari Johnson on December 12, 2011
When financial situations get hard, paying bills can become difficult. If you live in Pennsylvania and you find that paying your utility bill is getting too difficult, there are certain programs in the state that might be able to help you.
If you cannot predict how much your utility bill is going to cost, making it difficult to fit it in your budget, you can call the company you receive your power from and ask for budget billing. With budget billing, the amount you pay for these services will be consistent each month, though they may adjust the cost four times a year depending on your usage. Having your utilities billed this way you allow you to plan for your utility bill in your budget each month.
If your problem is instead that something has come up in your family life unexpectedly, such as a divorce, sudden unemployment, or family or medical emergencies, the CARES (Customer Assistance Referral and Evaluation) Program might be able to help you find a way to pay your bills. You should speak to your utility company about CARES.
In the case that your financial problems are longer term, a Customer Assistance Program (CAP) can adjust your monthly payment by using a percentage of your income. On the other hand, a Low-Income Usage Reduction Program (LIURP) can help you use less energy so that your bill will not be so high.
If none of these programs apply to your situation and you still need help, you can also apply for hardship funds. These are grants paid directly to your utility provider on your behalf, so long as you qualify.
To discover if you do qualify for any of these programs, or to see what else you can do to alleviate some of the pressure your utility bills may be placing on your budget, you will want to call your utility provider and explain your situation. They should be able to direct you to the program that best suits your needs. In most situations, your income cannot exceed a set amount and you have to be having issues with keeping up with a set payment plan. If you do need help, call your utility company to see if you qualify.
