It's every little kid’s dream to own a pet. From puppies to parrots to cats, animals bring people of all ages immense joy in their lives. Studies have even shown that pet owners are more likely to live longer than none pet owners. But when pets get sick, they may need medical care just like people, and sometimes this need comes at a time when individuals cannot bear the extra financial burden of veterinary bills. For those individuals in this situation, there are many ways to help with this problem.
The first tactic individuals should use is to be proactive. Talking to the vet about problems paying can really go a long way. This is especially true with veterinarians because they are generally in the line of practice they are because they absolutely love animals. Usually vets will go out of their way to make the situation work if it is truly in the best interest of the animal in question. Negotiating payment plans with the office is a great way to be sure that individuals can get the care they need for their pets, while remaining financially stable and responsible.
Individuals could also offer to volunteer their services to the office, such as cleaning kennels, walking dogs, and other routine jobs that are usually given to a paid intern or other part-time position. This saves the office money in labor costs, so they may be inclined to at least reduce some of the cost of the medical care in return for these services. Finally, individuals should be sure that they are choosing the vet intelligently. Veterinary offices in rural or poorer areas are often much cheaper than those in well-to-do areas in cities and suburbs. Shopping around and getting a couple different opinions, just like with doctors for people, can go a long way toward reducing the cost of the procedure.
If these measures do not yield any success it is important for individuals to continue searching. For many breeds of animals there are groups who are willing to help finance their medical bills. There are also non-profits for animals that may either have funds set up to help with medical bills or have contacts with individuals willing to help with medical bills. Utilizing these resources can be a key to being able to afford the care individuals need to get for their pets. |
